On the Market: Everything You Need to Know About Making a Move to New Canaan, CT

New Canaan

Larchmont, Rowayton, Byram and New Canaan are four of the most desirable communities to buy a home right now in the Westchester/Fairfield area. So, each week, we’re showcasing one of those towns and a hot property currently on the market there. With insider information on what you can expect from each area, you’ll be better informed than ever on making the best move for your family.

Today we’re looking at a six bedroom colonial styled home in New Canaan. Masha Charles of Coldwell Banker, fills you in on everything you need to know about making a move to this most beautiful area in New Canaan:

Highlights of living here: The downtown village is known for its variety of fine shops, excellent restaurants and services. New Canaan is also home to numerous historic landmarks, including Waveny House, built in 1912 for the family of Lewis Lapham, one of the founders of Texaco. Other interesting locations include the Little Red Schoolhouse, the last one-room schoolhouse in use in Connecticut, and the Philip Johnson Glass House. The New Canaan Library is the hub of the community and boasts a broad series of educational programs for adults and children, plus computer classes, book clubs and cutting-edge technology.

The lifestyle in New Canaan: This is a great place to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Our town has a number of open spaces and parks, including Mead Memorial in the heart of town and Irwin Park, as well as the 250-acre Waveny Park. There is also the New Canaan Nature Center, Mill Pond and Kiwanis Park, which has a man-made beach. There is something for everyone in the town known as “The Next Station to Heaven.”

Most common architectural styles: Part of the attraction of New Canaan is the variety of home styles, but there are probably more Colonials than any other design. There is also a good mix of modern, contemporary, antique, ranch and multi-level homes.

Favorite spot in town: Mostly, I love just walking into town and looking at the ever-changing window displays to see what is new, or looking up at the marquee sign on the New Canaan Playhouse movie theater to see what two movies are playing.
