Since 1974, the Linen Shop in New Canaan has been a purveyor of fine linens, home accessories and monogrammed luxuries. Elizabeth King talks to Serendipity about how to achieve beauty and comfort in the bedroom.
Why do you define the bedroom as the single most important room in the house? It’s a room that needs to be beautiful, but more importantly needs to function as a true sanctuary—a place to rest and recharge daily. We spend one third of our lives in bed and we know and crave the benefits of better sleep.
What is most important for clients to consider when selecting bed linens? Bed linens are at the core of the ultimate night’s sleep. Better sheets induce better sleep so we advise our clients to buy the best quality that their budget allows. Choosing sheeting is a very personal decision. It can be for the crispness of cotton percale or the luxurious softness of sateen. For me, linen is the ultimate fabric; it gets better and softer with use and perfectly regulates in all seasons—warm in winter and cool in summer.
How are trends changing and how is your company’s approach changing with them? Textural elements are still important—especially for bedding. We always layer multiple textures on a bed using hand-stitched quilts, slubby linens, chunky knits, metallic shimmers, cut velvets and more. But today’s clients want a more modern feel and a lower profile. We will stack the sleeping pillows or fold a special blanket at the foot of the bed instead of a lofty duvet. Decorative pillows are used more strategically. We like to create a horizontal line; a lumbar pillow is the perfect finish.
