Carolyn Marks and Michael Malone
June 9, 2018, Shelter Island
For Carolyn Marks and Michael Malone, who reside in Long Beach, NY, living near the beach has always reflected who they are as a couple. “There is no place in the world that makes us happier,” enthuses Carolyn. So when it came time to pick a wedding venue, being close to the water was a top priority. “We got married in Shelter Island, NY—it’s a tiny gem of an island between the North and South forks of Long Island. It is accessible only by ferry, which made it a special little weekend getaway,” Carolyn says.
The couple fell in love with the Pridwin Hotel and Cottages the first time they saw the beautiful Gatsby-era building overlooking the bay. “We were able to fill the hotel so that everyone staying there was our family and friends,” she adds. They created a weekend of events, including a Clambake Welcome Party during which the bride’s brother’s band played and a wedding reception, which kicked off with the bride and groom entering by boat.
Carolyn, a graphic designer and illustrator, had her hand in every part of the wedding’s design and theme. “I wanted to really evoke the feeling of being on this secluded island surrounded by water and ‘sailing away’ for the weekend,” says the bride. She picked soft blue watercolor to bring in a beachy vibe, but offset it with bright pops of color and fun elements. The “save the date” was a mock ferry ticket to set the tone for the weekend. Seashells on the invitation gave a nod to the Shelter Island beaches. She made mini sailboats as place cards and hand painted buoys for table numbers.
