Founded 5 years ago, House of Clement’s flagship design firm and furniture showroom is located in Westport, Connecticut with a satellite office in Paris. Owner Gilles Clement is known for his European sensibility and boundary-pushing use of bold patterns and rich colors. House of Clement interiors are elegant, comfortable, and always a bit unexpected.
What’s your design philosophy?
As an interior designer, I always approach a home as if it were a woman. I love to dress it with the same sex appeal, sophistication and originality as a haute couture Valentino dress. I believe in the ‘whoa’ effect and have noticed that my clients share that sense of fulfillment as well once I finish their room.
What are your top three design rules?
My design rules are that my work should always represent my client’s sensibility, and therefore be unique to the project; it should always be and feel comfortable; and should always be functional for the client’s lifestyle.
What one element do you think no design can do without?
I truly believe that lighting is the [anchor] of interior design. It defines the atmosphere of a room, implements a sense of visual comfort and adds to the uniqueness of a room more than any other element.
What’s your favorite room to design?
I especially enjoy designing the family room or great room, as it is the room where people spend the most time. Therefore it is always the most exciting to create as it stands as the hearth of one’s home. It literally sets the vibe for how much you’ll enjoy your home’s lifestyle!
What design trend have you seen recently that you love?
I try to stay away from design trends. They come and go. I believe in timeless designs, the ones that have either proven themselves or the new ones that you know will become the future reference. Timeless is the answer!
Are there colors you’re especially drawn to?
The colors that I have always loved and will always love are white, grey, orange, fuchsia, chartreuse and purple!
