Clay Art Center’s recently opened the THEY exhibit, the second of their shows for 2018, a year featuring artists whose works examine social justice issues and the intricacies of maneuvering life, lifestyles and living within a global society. THEY’s focus is on social equity and access within the field of ceramics. Curator Roberto Lugo, an award-winning, nationally-recognized ceramic artist, social activist, educator and spoken word poet put together this show of nine ceramic artists in the hopes of creating conversations between several marginalized communities. Attendees were enthralled as Roberto gave an impassioned speech about his work which combines graffiti with iconic images of contemporary culture and shared his rap talents. “The artists I’ve invited use their own human experience to relate to others.The show is about employing empathy instead of competition with out differences,” says Roberto Lugo. “This opening reception was the big success it was because of the amazing ceramic artists in the show and our many enthusiastic volunteers, artists and supporters.” says Executive Director Leigh Taylor Mickelson. Believing strongly that the arts has the ability to touch and enrich lives, Clay Art Center’s mission is to offer a stimulating space for studio practice, exhibition and educational opportunities to better serve the community.
