For over 30 years, Dinyar Wadia and his team of talented designers have been putting their stamp on the homes of Fairfield County. The New Canaan-based residential, interior and landscape design firm is known for designing and building high-end, traditionally-minded homes that feature the up-to-date amenities that modern families want. Helping clients design houses that complement their lifestyles and the environment is their mission.
What inspires you?
Interesting projects. They need not be large or expensive, but they need to be expressive of the client’s personality. We are designing and decorating custom homes, so every house should look and feel different.
What’s your design philosophy?
Traditional and classical designs are timeless and never go out of style. Trends come and go, and quickly date a design. Having s
aid that, it is important to recognize how
our clients live their lives, and make sure
that designs are functional, as well as
aesthetically pleasing.
If there was one design trend you could bring back, what would it be?
It’s not really a trend, but I am a proponent
of vernacular progression – the manner
in which a house grows and evolves
over time. Our society doesn’t seem to
have any patience nowadays.
What’s one element that every home should have?
Every house needs a wow moment—that one memorable moment that sets it apart.
What’s the greatest challenge in your job and how do you handle it?
The various building and zoning codes can make it difficult at times to design the home that our clients want. It’s important to know these codes inside and out, and be able to come up with creative solutions.
Is there common design mistake you come across, and how do you correct it?
I cringe every time I see an incorrect entablature on a porch – usually when the frieze is not aligning with the neck of the column, as it should be. Not only does the design look top heavy, it’s just incorrect, and displays a lack of knowledge of traditional design. The solution is easy: Buy a book and study your history!
What’s your favorite room to design?
The most important room in a
house – which varies from project to
project, and client to client.
