“The best way to maintain one’s color is to always use shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair,” advises celeb colorist Angela Cosmai of Angela Cosmai Salon in Greenwich, CT, who specializes in color correction, and has her own line of products. Add in some highlights or lowlights around the face and part to distract the eye from seeing gray coming in. “This will help with the harsh line of demarcation,” she explains.
When coloring, Cosmai opts for color without ammonia, which is milder, and lets the gray strands take on a lighter shade than the rest. “So the end result is not a flat tone. When the hair is dyed a solid color, the gray has a better chance of peeking through,” she says.
