Jordan Baker, president and founder of Brown Dyed Girl, had just started in the fashion industry after college when she came across a tie dye sweatshirt she loved—but couldn’t afford. So she decided to make her own, which quickly became a side hustle.
“I grew a bit through word of mouth and Instagram and ended up quitting my job to pursue my dream of owning my own brand with no idea of how it would turn out,” she says. And things have turned out well: After a few Instagram influencers tagged Brown Dyed Girl in their posts, business took off and Baker moved from her one-person shop in her parents’ basement to a new space. Then, in October 2020 she opened her brick-and-mortar store in Somers, NY, to go along with her booming online business.
“I sell high-end loungewear connecting art and comfort for a long-lasting closet staple, for those at home or on the go,” explains Baker, who says that her Black Reverse sweatshirt ($98) and sweatpants ($102) are top sellers. And there’s lots more to come, too: “I have so many things planned for Brown Dyed Girl —collaborations and new collections coming soon,” she says.
