Summer Getaways: Fly in a BiPlane in Rhinebeck, NY

Cruise above the Hudson Valley with a plane ride in Rhinebeck.

Get a bird’s eye view of the Hudson Valley aboard a newly restored, 1929 New Standard D-25 biplane designed expressly for barnstorming (aka exhibition flying). Purchase a ride for $75 and then get fitted in a helmet and goggles for the flight, which takes up to four passengers over the Hudson River before returning to its base at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodome.

While You’re In Town: History buffs should save time to visit the Queen Anne-style Wilderstein Historic Estate, which offers a peek into the lives of three generations of the Suckley family, from Gilded Age aristocracy. For dinner, book a table at American Bounty at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park.

Where to Stay: If the words “George Washington slept here” appeal, then stay at the circa 1766 Beekman Arms, America’s oldest operating inn. (Alexander Hamilton, FDR and the majority of Chelsea Clinton’s wedding guests have booked rooms). From $155 per night
