Kelly Corroon, founder of Corroon, grew up in a family of passionate travelers. She then traveled extensively for her work in fashion (Ralph Lauren, Gap) and spent 11 years living in London and Hong Kong with her young family, where they took every opportunity to travel throughout Europe, Africa and Asia. Her vision was a stylish, affordable luggage brand that recalled an age when travel was about adventure and fun. Features editor Holly Parmelee spoke with Corroon about her business:
Why did you create your own luggage line?
It may have been extreme jet lag at the luggage carousel in Hong Kong, but I watched the bags going around and wondered why there was so much black.
What sets your luggage apart?
I am a color girl, and I love to pair unexpected combinations together, so the range is definitely about twisting classics. We have sourced this incredibly light, durable canvas from British Millerain, so the bags are super-lightweight.
Do you have any great packing tips?
I usually stick with one general color palette (black or tonal) and work my way up from the shoes. I pack a sexy heel for night, and flat brogues or boots for walking. I like to be über-organized on the plane, and my strategy is small bags that each have a purpose: I carry our Shek O toiletry kit with Malin+Goetz hand cream, Clarins HydraQuench lip balm and a toothbrush. I use our Sungkay, which is padded like a puffy coat, for chargers, my iPod and phones.
How do you beat jet lag?
The best solution I have come up with is getting some exercise and fresh air without fail, and don’t let yourself think about what time it is in your prior time zone.
Any beauty tips for traveling?
Beautycounter makes an amazing balm that I will put under my eyes a few times during the flight. I drink a ton of water. But I am not totally virtuous; there are few flights that I take that don’t include a glass of wine and chocolate!
