New Canaan Food Revolution Challenges Picky Eaters

Chef Nick Martschenko of South End and daughter Anna

The 4th New Canaan Food Revolution was held Saturday, May 20th, 2017 at the New Canaan Pop Up Park to encourage children to try new foods and to raise funds for local charities. (This year, tickets were opened up to adults, too.) Jamie Oliver’s wish is to create a strong sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook and empower people everywhere to fight obesity. This community event featured dancers from New England Dance Academy and vegetable printing with the New Canaan Library. Visitors experienced 14-food stops on the trail, getting a stamp each time they tasted the food served (with all participants receiving a Bravery Certificate). Challenging foods included: sweet potato ice Cream from Farmer’s Cow, teriyaki jerky from South Avenue Butcher, vegan hot dogs from Locali, maple syrup cheese from Ally Bally Bee, brownie batter hummus with fresh jicama dippers from Walter Stewart’s and farro salad with vegetables from Elm restaurant. Mind The Gap provided live music and Snow Hill Farm donated a farm tour. Filling in the Blanks, a charity which helps fight childhood hunger by providing local, needy children with weekend meals, was honored. Says Chair Rachel Lampen: “The kids really have a good time and learn so much. One lady from the city said her picky eater tried five new things and when he was given his Bravery Certificate he was super proud.”
