Meet 2020 DM Honorees Charles M. Haver and Stewart R. Skolnick: When asked how they approach their design process, Charles M. Haver, AIA of Haver & Skolnick Architect says, “The most important ingredient in creating a successful design is in getting to know our clients intimately. This includes understanding the unique personalities and needs of each member of the family, including the family pets!”
And it’s an approach that has worked well for Haver and Stewart R. Skolnick, AIA, who launched their successful Roxbury, CT-based firm 24 years ago.
These days, the pair takes on projects throughout the area, including in Litchfield, Fairfield and Westchester counties. And their services encompass not only architecture, but also interior and landscape design as well. “We find that the three disciplines are very interrelated and offer our clients a full range of services resulting in a seamless project,” says Skolnick.
And that can go all the way down to the details—which are some of their favorite projects to take on. “Recently, we renovated and furnished a Central Park duplex apartment while the clients were away for the summer,” says Haver. “When they arrived home, they found a totally new environment, including new furnishings, tableware, linens and even fresh tooth- brushes.”
As for what inspires them, Havers says they “find inspiration everywhere.” Case in point: “On a recent ski trip to Telluride, we discovered a source for creating the most beautiful fire pits with forged steel logs and acorns,” he explains.

Locally, they also give back to the community. Not only do they aim to employ craftsmen and artisans from the area, says Haver, but Skolnick was a member of the Planning Commission for the town of Roxbury, and Haver is on the Historic District Commission.

Up next? “We’re very excited to be building our own weekend home on Fishers Island, NY,” says Skolnick. “We look forward to many enjoyable excursions to oversee construction over the summer.”
