Audubon Connecticut hosted its annual Environmental Leadership Awards Benefit on April 25th at the Belle Haven Club in Greenwich, to honor Thomas E. Lovejoy, PhD and Camille Broderick. Dr. Lovejoy, a world-renowned conservation biologist was presented with the prestigious Environmental Conservation Award. He coined the term “biological diversity” during his nearly five decades of work in the tropical rainforests of the Brazilian Amazon. His quote “If you take care of birds, you take care of most of the environmental problems in the world” was a launchpad for 2018’s “Year of the Bird” major collaboration between the National Audubon Society, National Geographic, BirdLife International, and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
Long-time Audubon Greenwich volunteer Camille Broderick was presented with the Katie O’Brien Lifetime Achievement Award for the passion and dedication she has brought to Audubon, serving as a Teacher Naturalist at the Audubon Center in Greenwich, on the center’s Board of Directors, and chairing its Education Committee. Notable guests included: Senator Richard Blumenthal; David B. Ford; B. Holt Thrasher, Chairman Emeritus of the National Audubon Society and Dr. Lucy R. Waletzky.
