Jacques Pépin’s New Book

Jacques Pépin
Jacques Pepin Book
$30, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, hmhco.com

Legendary television chef and cookbook author Jacques Pépin, 81, has his pick of sous chefs. His latest cooking partner, however, is his 13-year-old granddaughter, Shorey. “Food is a common language. It’s a place where we can come together,” says Pepin, whose newest book, A Grandfather’s Lessons: In the Kitchen with Shorey, is full of simple yet elegant recipes (like fish tacos and easy cheese soufflé), basic cooking skills and even instructions on setting a table. The book is meant to bring families together in the kitchen, but Pepin says that’s only part of his mission. “You talk when you’re cooking, but you talk more when you’re sitting down having the meal. The table is the canvas where you can start having discussions.”
