9 Tips To Get a Restful Night’s Sleep

We spend one-third of our lives be-tween the sheets, and according to the experts, we’re not making the most of that time. We stay up too late, wake up too early and when we are in bed, we toss and turn. We all know that deep, restorative sleep makes us more alert, more productive, happier — and in the long run, healthier. So it makes sense to want your bedroom to be conducive to a good night’s sleep (as well as beautiful, of course). Since your bed is the most important piece of furniture in the room, start there, with a good mattress — and then work your way out.

Mattress: A high-quality mattress can keep you comfortable for 20 to 50 years, while midrange brands typically last no more than 10. The difference is high-performance materials and handmade workmanship that stand the test of time. Sheeting: Don’t play the numbers game. The quality of the cotton and where it’s woven are more important than thread count. Duvets and Sleeping Pillows: Down or feather duvets and pillows are a popular choice because they are light and fluffy while still providing much warmth. For duvets, choose the appropriate weight for the season, and for pillows the appropriate fill for the firmness you prefer. These can last many years; they are machine washable, and actually hold up better than synthetic fillings. Use the low-heat or air setting in the dryer, as higher heat can cause clumping. Decorative Pillows and Throws: For your last layer and the finishing touch, add a folded quilt or throw at the foot of the bed and some decorative pillows. These may not necessarily help you sleep better, but they do give your bed and bedroom personal style.
