Weekend Getaway Idea: Sea Island Resort in Georgia

Whether you’re looking for a last-minute getaway idea to fill the time between Christmas and New Year’s or are planning some upcoming weekend travel for the winter and spring, there are plenty of resorts where you can do exactly that.

One to consider: Sea Island Resort in Georgia. Located on one of a series of private barrier islands about an hour from Florida’s Jacksonville International Airport, the property has been around since 1928. There are a variety of places to stay within the resort, including, among others, the 43-room Lodge, which has multi-bedroom cottage rentals and recently redesigned rooms and The Cloister, which offers ocean-view rooms as well as gated Ocean Residences.

There are also over a dozen different dining options—from the just launched Georgian Rooms, where guests can choose from different menus in different “rooms”, to the recently redesigned steakhouse Colt & Alison, to the kid-friendly Wonderland, with its ice cream bar and 60 different candy choices.

Add in tons of things to do—there’s a daily schedule—as well as golf and the spa and it makes for a great option when you’ve got lots of people to please. (We’re looking at you, multi-generational trips!)

Here’s what’s happening at the resort in the next few months:

If you’re looking for a last-minute getaway:

The resort truly goes all out for the holidays, with over 100,000 ornaments and outdoor lights, plus close to 100 decorated trees throughout the property. In particular, you’ll find a host of fun offerings centered around New Year’s Eve, including a giant Gingerbread House Display, live music, kid-friendly events, a New Year’s Eve “Party Under the Stars” and New Year’s Day brunch. For the wellness-minded end, consider the 5K on the morning of December 31 or the Polar Bear Plunge on the 1st.

If you’re looking to be inspired:

You may want to consider heading down for the annual Creativity Conference, which runs on January 12 and 13. The event, started by a husband-and-wife team, is now in its 10th year and features a host of lectures (think Ted Talks) from a number of speakers, including U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón, author Amy Tan, mountain climber Hugh Herr and many more.

If you’re looking for golf:

Women looking to up their golf game this year, this one’s for you: The resort’s annual Women’s Golf Getaway Weekends run on specific weekends throughout the year, including February 22-25, March 7-10 and March 21-24. There, you’ll get upwards of 14 hours of instruction, strategy and fundamentals sessions, and more, with instructors like Gale Peterson, who was named an LPGA Top 50 teacher.
